Check Wallpaper: Small or Large? A Guide to Decorating With Checks
Check Wallpaper: Small or Large? Introducing Our New Checks
There are some patterns that simply never go out of style.
Stripes are one. Florals are another.
And then there are checks.
Familiar, beautifully simple and endlessly versatile, checked patterns have been used in interiors for generations. But change the scale or colour and suddenly the same simple idea can take on an entirely different personality.
Our new Check Wallpaper Collection explores exactly that.
We’ve created our checks in two scales, a tiny Mini Check and a larger, more graphic Large Check, in a palette of some of our favourite signature Munks & Me colours.
Soft blue. Olive green. Deeper blue. Dusty pink. Warm red. Muted yellow.
Colours designed to bring personality to a children’s room while still being wonderfully easy to live with.

The Timeless Appeal of Checks
We love patterns that don't belong to one particular moment.
Checks have that wonderful quality.
They can feel nostalgic without feeling old-fashioned, playful without being childish and traditional without making a room feel formal.
That makes them particularly suited to children's interiors.
In a nursery, a soft check can feel gentle and calming. Add a bed, stronger textiles and more grown-up furniture a few years later and exactly the same wallpaper can take on an entirely different character.
It’s the kind of pattern that leaves plenty of room for the story around it to change.

Mini Check: A Little Pattern With a Lot of Charm
Our Mini Check is the quieter of the two.
Tiny in scale, the repeating check creates a beautifully soft pattern across the wall. From further away it can almost read as texture, while closer up you begin to see the detail.
That makes it incredibly easy to decorate around.
Hang artwork over it.
Introduce patterned bedding.
Add stripes or florals.
Bring in colourful furniture.
The wallpaper adds interest without needing to become the loudest element in the room.
It's particularly lovely for nurseries and smaller bedrooms where you want pattern, but still want the overall space to feel calm.

Large Check: Same Idea, Completely Different Feeling
Increase the scale and something interesting happens.
Our Large Check takes the same familiar pattern and makes it much more graphic.
The larger blocks give the walls more presence and allow the wallpaper to become a stronger part of the room's design.
It feels playful, confident and wonderfully simple.
And because the pattern itself is so classic, even at a larger scale it doesn't feel overly themed or tied to a particular age.
Style it with a cot and it works in a nursery.
Pair it with a bed, artwork and stronger textiles and it becomes a brilliant children's bedroom.

Small Check or Large Check?
This might be our favourite part.
The two scales allow you to decide how much you want the wallpaper to lead the room.
Choose Mini Check if you want something softer and more textural, a pattern that sits quietly behind everything else.
Choose Large Check if you want the walls to have more impact and become a stronger part of the overall scheme.
Neither is better.
They simply create very different moods.
And that's one of the things we love most about pattern: scale can completely change how a design feels without changing the design itself.
A Colour Palette Made for Children's Rooms
Colour was just as important to us as scale when creating this collection.
Rather than bright primary shades, we wanted colours with a little softness and depth — shades that bring colour into a child's room while still sitting comfortably alongside the rest of the home.
Soft Blue
Gentle, airy and incredibly easy to live with. Pair it with warm cream, natural oak, chocolate brown or touches of rust.
Olive Green
An earthy alternative to traditional green. Beautiful with timber, cream, ochre and warm brown for a nature-inspired room.
Deep Blue
A little stronger and more graphic. Deep blue works beautifully with cream and natural wood, or layered with red and softer blues for something more playful.
Dusty Pink
Soft and warm without feeling overly sweet. Add burgundy, mocha, olive or natural timber to give the scheme more depth.
Warm Red
Full of character. Our red check brings energy to a children's room and looks particularly lovely balanced with cream, warm wood and quieter neutrals.
Muted Yellow
Warm and cheerful without being too bright. Pair it with cream and timber for something soft, or introduce blue, green or rust for a more colourful scheme.

Checks Are Made for Pattern Mixing
One of the loveliest things about a check is how well it plays with other patterns.
Try it with a floral.
Add a stripe.
Introduce a scalloped cushion.
Layer in illustrated artwork.
Because checks have such a simple geometric structure, they provide a brilliant counterpoint to more organic or detailed designs.
The Mini Check in particular can almost become the room's neutral, allowing you to be much braver with pattern elsewhere.

Checks Don't Need to Mean Traditional
Checked wallpaper can certainly have a nostalgic quality, but the way you style it completely changes the result.
Combine it with antique or vintage-inspired furniture and it can feel wonderfully nostalgic.
Put exactly the same wallpaper beside contemporary furniture, simple shapes and unexpected colour and it suddenly feels much more modern.
That's what makes classic patterns so useful.
They give you a foundation rather than dictating the entire room.

Try Checks on All Four Walls
Checks work particularly beautifully wrapped around an entire room.
The repetition gives them a natural rhythm and, especially with the Mini Check, continuing the wallpaper around all four walls can make the pattern feel surprisingly calm.
With the Large Check, the effect is bolder and more immersive.
If you're unsure which scale will work in your space, order samples of both and look at them from across the room rather than only close up.
Scale is much easier to understand once you see the pattern in the space itself.
From Nursery to Big Kid Bedroom
This is always one of our biggest considerations when designing for children's interiors.
What happens next?
The cot disappears.
A bed arrives.
Toys give way to books.
Artwork changes.
A bedside table appears, and eventually perhaps a desk.
A simple check doesn't belong to any one of those stages.
That's exactly why we love it.
Choose a beautiful foundation and let everything around it tell the story of who lives there now.
A few years later, change those layers and allow the room to tell a new one.

Discover Mini Check & Large Check Wallpaper
Two scales. Six beautiful colours. One timeless pattern.
Choose Mini Check for something delicate and understated, or Large Check for a bolder, more graphic take on this interiors classic.
Both have been designed as beautiful foundations for nurseries and children's rooms — playful enough for childhood, but considered enough to grow alongside them.
